Learn how the ACLC's African Canadian Youth Justice Program serves African Canadian youth involved in the justice system while providing community supports.
The ACLC supports the National African Canadian Initiative on Full Participation and Capacity Building.
The community outreach activities of the ACLC involve a programmatic approach to youth education surrounding racism. The ACLC regularly undertakes public legal education and various community development projects. These include speaking engagements at various high schools and outreach workshops targeted at Black youth. The ACLC has also facilitated a mentorship program for youth to expose young people to international and national human rights systems and issues.
In the spring of 2006, The ACLC launched the African Canadian Youth Justice Program (ACYJP). This program provides support to youth involved in the justice system. The ACYJP has a youth engagement component. It also has a Youth Advisory Committee and will rely on the participation of youth in Community Case Conferences, with the consent of the youth involved in the system.
The ACLC also encourages youth membership in the clinic. The youth membership category is open to any African Canadian, aged 14 to 17, who is normally resident in Ontario and who understands, affirms, and supports, in practice and in principle, the mandate, purpose, and objectives of the ACLC.
