Legal Clinics

Legal Aid Ontario funds community legal clinics and specialty clinics which handle specific areas of law (such as workers' compensation) or serve specific communities (for instance, urban aboriginals and African Canadians). The services of community legal clinics address the unique legal needs of people with low incomes and other disadvantaged groups. Typical issues that clinics address include:

  • criminal injuries compensation
  • Employment Insurance
  • employment rights
  • Ontario Disability Support Program
  • government pensions
  • human rights
  • immigration and refugee matters
  • Ontario Works and welfare
  • tenant rights
  • Workers' Compensation
  • workplace safety and insurance
  • employment rights

Legal clinic staff provide information, legal advice, and represent people in proceedings before certain types of courts, boards, and tribunals. Clinics also may be involved in test cases, public legal education initiatives, community-based organizing, and other law reform activities.

Prospective clients should contact a community legal clinic directly to determine if it can help with a legal problem, and to find out if they meet the financial requirements for using its services.
